Publishing Trade Awards 2012

The publishers of Wales came together in Aberystwyth on 15 March to attend a special event in which the Publishing Trade Awards were presented. During the ceremony, the work of publishers was celebrated both in terms of book sales and the standard of design and production.

The publishing trade awards are presented every two years, and this year the ceremony coincided with the Welsh Books Council’s 50th anniversary celebrations.

"Our aim in presenting these awards is to honour the sterling work of the publishers in preparing a wide range of books for readers," said Professor M. Wynn Thomas, Chair of the Books Council. "As a body that provides a service to the publishing industry in Wales, the Council is very conscious of the efforts made by publishers to uphold the highest standards in producing attractive materials for children and adults. It gives us great pleasure, therefore, to celebrate their success on this special occasion."

During the ceremony, 18 different awards were presented, including categories for best-selling titles and books borrowed most often from libraries, in addition to recognising the best in the fields of design and production. This year, for the first time, an additional award category was added, namely for design and production in the field of English- and Welsh-language magazines.

The specially commissioned trophies were designed by Carwyn Evans, the Cardiff-based artist, winner of the Fine Arts Prize at the National Eisteddfod in 2009.

"The publishers should all be warmly congratulated on their work," added Elwyn Jones, Chief Executive of the Books Council. "The comments of members of the design panel of adjudicators testify to the developments seen in this important field over the past years, and the fact that twelve publishers have come to the fore in the various categories is ample proof of the vitality which characterises the current state of publishing in Wales, in both languages."

The Books Council was not the only establishment to celebrate a special milestone recently. In addressing the audience, Professor Thomas noted that Gwasg Gwynedd had celebrated 40 years of publishing, Seren, the Bridgend-based publisher, 30 years of publishing, and that Honno, the Welsh women’s press based in Aberystwyth, had also recently celebrated its 25th anniversary. He referred in particular to the remarkable contribution made by John Lewis, Gomer Press, Llandysul, Ceredigion, who recently celebrated his 80th birthday and who continues to be active in the family publishing business established 120 years ago.
