Reading for pleasure can impact positively on our well-being and mental health. Here are some reasons why reading is good for us.
Reduces stress by up to 68%
According to a study by the University of Sussex [1], reading can reduce stress by up to 68%. Their research showed that reading was the fastest and most effective way to reduce stress – better than listening to music, having a cuppa, or going for a walk, and that’s because the mind has the opportunity to immerse itself in a world far from the stresses of daily life, offering an escape.

Lowers your heartbeat in 6 minutes
Picking up a book forces someone to calm down. According to the same study from the University of Sussex, reading for as little as 6 minutes lowers the heartbeat, eases tension in muscles, and encourages the body and mind to relax.
Helps us to understand each other
A study published by the journal Science in 2013 showed that people who read fiction are better at accepting ideas, and are better prepared to understand that other people’s beliefs, desires and ideas can be different to their own.
Increases Empathy
Reading fiction can increase our empathy skills. As we read stories that deal with characters’ feelings, thoughts and emotions, and see the world through their eyes, our ability to understand and empathise with others who have lived through the experiences increases.
Learn something new
Reading can increase our knowledge and understanding of all kinds of areas and topics. Facts and ideas are aired, considered and then presented to the reader. Whatever your interest, reading is sure to help!
Better sleep
Having trouble sleeping? Reading a book rather than reaching for a phone or tablet before going to sleep can not only encourage sleep but also ensure better quality sleep. Looking at a screen before sleep lowers melantonin levels in the brain, the hormone that encourages sleep, while reading a book encourages the brain to relax.
A great brain workout
Reading stimulates a complex network of circuits and signals in the brain. In a study participants read the novel Pompeii by Robert Harris, and as tension in the story developed, more areas of the brain were found to be stimulated. Reading every day can therefore help us keep our cognitive abilities strong and healthy.
Just enjoy!
Perhaps most importantly, a good book can entertain us! You don’t need wi-fi or expensive equipment; indeed you can do it for free by being a library member. Reading is something that we can do anywhere, at any time
