About Us

Castell Brychan, home of the Books Council of Wales
The Books Council of Wales is a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO), Registered Charity number 1192269. Our main objectives are to support and develop the publishing industry in Wales, and to promote literacy and reading for pleasure.

We were established in Aberystwyth in 1961 and transferred to being a CIO in 2021.

Supporting the books sector

We work with publishers to nurture new talent and content in Welsh and English as well as offering specialist editing, design, marketing and distribution services.

We also administer grants to publishers, of both books and magazines, and independent booksellers.

How we work

Our funding comes partly from Welsh Government through Creative Wales and partly from the commercial operations of our wholesale book distribution centre.

We work from two sites – our offices are based in Castell Brychan overlooking Aberystwyth while our wholesale Distribution Centre is located on Glanyrafon Enterprise Park on the outskirts of the town
