What it’s like to work here

Our teams are based over two sites in Aberystwyth, with some working remotely. Our office at Castell Brychan is home to the Publishing Development department and Children’s Books and Reading Promotion department and some central functions too. From the office we can see across the town and far out to sea, and the view is well worth the trip up the hill – except when it’s raining!

Our Distribution Centre is located on the Glanyrafon Industrial Estate and is the heart of our industry, with around a million books at any one time stacked in a purpose-built warehouse, ready to go out to shops and customers. This is where our Customer Service, Sales and Logistics teams are based.

From day to day, we speak Welsh – those of us who have learnt or are learning Welsh, (and there are plenty, including Helgard, our Chief Exec) are able to use it daily and there’s plenty of support available too if you’re keen to brush up your language skills.

Though we’re a small team, we deliver many different activities at the Books Council. Here’s the kind of work you could get involved in:

  • Account management
  • Communications
  • Customer service
  • Design
  • Distribution
  • Editorial
  • Events
  • Finance
  • Grants
  • Logistics
  • Marketing
  • Partnerships
  • Project management
  • Proofreading
  • Sales
  • Schools’ resources
  • Supporting publishers
  • Warehousing

We attend careers fairs at universities and colleges to talk about the opportunities in the publishing industry in Wales. If you’re interested in working in the field of publishing and would like to know more about the career opportunities and types of roles available, you’re welcome to drop us a line.
